The Sudoku system works like a charm for me. Packing is not about feelings imho it’s about practicality, function and comfort. It’s about doing it as stress free as possible before, during & after the trip. Nobody wants to drag heavy luggage while on vacation. At least not me 😅
I love your little helper the paw in the shoe padt! 🐶😂
Start with the grid and personalize extras for your needs.
I started a capsule wardrobe and realized it started looking like a 3×3- that is, three bottoms, three layers, three shirts, ended up with three shoes, one rain jacket or coat depending on expected weather, one bag, one hat, one pair of gloves, one scarf etc- shoes for variable weather and based on activities, sneakers, walking waterproof boots, one pair of thin loafers. This is a capsule for Paris in cold weather. Pretty happy with how minimal it turned out.
Do you have a link for the travel vest you talked about I didn't see it
While I agree the 3×3 is not encompassing enough for most travelers, I want to respectfully push back on the notion of packing those “unitasker” outfits. I don’t think your airplane outfit should literally just be for the plane. I think we need to get more creative with how we approach these outfits.
The sudoku packing method does not include jewelry, accessories, or shoes in the grid
Some things I learned many years ago as a skier, when the then “new” idea of layering was introduced: never include anything made with cotton or cotton blend, because cotton next to the skin holds moisture/sweat and results in chills when cooling down, chafing or blisters. Only fabrics, such as wool, synthetics, silk or polyester. Also, these fabrics tend not to wrinkle as much as cotton or cotton blends.
I get what you're saying, but honey, BE on vacation. Don't bring all the moods, focus on the new of the trip instead…. Just downsize all of the rest while away from home and 'life.' 🙂
The content creator I follow for sudoku packing says to adapt the grid seasonally. For example, for summer, multiple “small” tops can take up one spot in the grid because we may need to change more often. Also, I’ve always figured that neither our travel outfits nor pajamas nor workout clothes weren’t part of the grid. That sounds like I was implementing the “plus 2/plus 6” part of your formula. I kind of thought that’s implied. By reducing the number of clothing in the grid, we’ve built a trimmer foundation to allow for the extras. I’m currently traveling light with my grid plus a dress (the real game changer, IMO), a workout outfit, and my travel outfit. Regardless of the different methods of minimal travel packing, I think 2 shoes and three pants can get most people through most trips. 🙂
Shoes and accessories are NOT included in the Sudoku. The grid is supposed to serve as a base, and you DO extend if there is certain need or if you’ll be traveling to wildly different climates.
You can always throw in enough variables to make something not work. Nothing profound there.
I'm really confused by your method. The 3x3x3 method works great! You have to account for different weather, excursions, etc., but just add those into your suitcase. You still should be able to fit it into a carryon.
I am going to Malta, Egypt, then London in late Oct/ early Nov. I am fine packing for one climate, but Egypt will be hot with cool evenings, and London will probably too cold for this Floridian. Malta will be easy, just like a Florida winter. I am limited in luggage because Egypt is all hosted. I am only allowed a 28" checked and a personal item. Oh, and I need to bring a yoga mat that effectively takes up a third of my suitcase. For this 72-year-old, and a bit overweight, I want to be comfortable but nicely dressed. I watch these videos for ideas. I am still overwhelmed.
I will be honest, I haven't heard of the 3×3 grid packing. I will say, we were on a cruise, I had packed a few extra clothes but not many. The ports we stopped at were SO hot, we had soaking wet clothes when we got back. I went through the extra clothes in the first 3 ports. We had 5 more. I had brought easy laundry soap. I did laundry 3 times because of the weather. I do pretty well not overpacking, my problem is under packing.
Always such great advice. Thanks Laurie!
Great Video Laurie…I tend to always over pack. This video is perfect!!
Nah. I take what I want to take — color-coordinated and reasonable, of course. I don’t mind checking a bag.
I have a conundrum – my husband and I cruise a lot, usually at a minimum, 14-20 days a trip (including the flights). We usually stay in an upgraded cabin that includes a private dining room from the general cruisers. People usually dress in nice collared shirts and slacks for men and nice pants/tops or dresses for women. Then there are usually 3 “dressy” evenings elevating my wardrobe those nites. Then there are clothes for the excursions. I want to cut back on the clothes I bring big time. What’s giving me the biggest heartburn is how many times can I get away with wearing the nice stuff for dinner over again; and can I get away with not wearing 3 different dresses for the “fancy nights”? I usually wear a hoodie, long sleeve sun-shirt, rain coat, and track pants on the cold planes. I can’t figure out how I can get everything for evenings in one bag, given the bathroom kits and meds for me and hubby? Help! How many times on a cruise do you all wear the dressier clothes? From: Exhausted First World Problems Complainer with an Etiquette Issue . 😂😂🤣🤣😂😂
I love the 3×3 method! All clothes, no accessories. I add in say a dress, shoes and a jacket maybe. I also don’t count in my travel outfit. I appreciate your video! 3×3+2 or three. I do like the idea that ALL clothes can mix and match everything. I also like how you decide on your shoes first! Those are important!
I agree with what this video says, to a point. I think it really depends on what activities you plan on participating in, the weather and climate of where you will be, and, for me, access to a washing machine (I was able to get to a washing machine about half way through the trip). ! I used the Sudoku packing method (with undergarments and PJs excluded of course) on a trip to Europe for 10 days and it worked for me.
OMG! The Quince dolman sleeve sweater top is my favorite travel top. 😊 I have in navy and charcoal gray. *I always start with my shoes and then weather an activities. The 3×3 would never work for me it's just not flexible enough. Cheers 😊
I love your sweater in 10 colours😊 I wish I can buy it here in Europe. Looks so good. And thanks for that helpfull Video.
We were in Sedona at the same time!!!!!
We saw balloons on Monday am May 10th > maybe it was you?
Safe travels.
