My tips: 1. Yes you should stay in the central area but I would not recommend belagio it is very touristy and busy and a bit far away from things I would recommend Verena or tremezzo more 2. Be careful with the boats, there are at times in touristy places a massive like to get on a boat or buy tickets so be in plenty time 3. Rent a car you can not rely on boats to get you everywhere if u want to go to a shop you will need to have a way to travel and there aren’t many taxi’s That’s pretty much all my advice 💖💖💖
I am just back from Lake Como. It is fabulous. No way I'd stay in Milan. We got the train from Milano Centrale to Bellano where we stayed. The buses are very good if you want to see little towns on the left side. Trains were out when we stayed and had to get bus from Lecco. Ferries are good but do be aware of long queues. We got out early for our ferry trips.
Bellagio is without question THE dumbest place to stay on lake como. Stay away at all costs. Dont even bother to visit. Menaggio, varenna, and the small villages on the western shore are much more important and much more exciting.
I don't think Milan is the better place to stay. If you are worried about prices, stay towards the top of the Lake and check out apartments or agritourism ( they can be very affordable) Trust me on this. Milan can be expensive as well depending…. So, check around and do your research. In my opinion Lake Como is much better overall than Milano.

The food was so bad. Very touristy. Would not recommend visiting Como for anything other than a day trip.
