In resume: be a coward. Millions of people live and work in Brazil every day with no major problem. Yes, there's crime but I don't see it any different than the worst parts of traffic ridden neighborhoods in the USA cities.

as someone who has lived in Brazil, I agree w all of these, obviously there are exceptions in some peoples' experience but this is solid advice

And I have to say that… there is only gunfire between police and drugdeallers when the police has a mission to invade favela.
Every time police has a mission to invade there, they broadcast on TV and alert people to keep away from favela.
In normal days, that doesn't happen.
I've been to Rio 14 times and I didn't have any problem so far.
Just watched a video of another turist that used public trans por here in Brasil and was ok.
the metro in Rio was pretty save and much much quicker than with the car at certain times
