βNo eating while walkingβ is not really a rule. But it can be broken down in two rules, which are βDonβt block the way by walking too slow or almost stoppingβ and βBe extra careful your food doesnβt touch anybody around youβ. Most locations with street food shops are tourist destinations and crowded. My advice is to be considerate for the others, as Iβve seen many tourists who fail to do so.
To save you some stress,I really would recommend a comprehensive pocket guide that will not only answer your questions but also deepen your understanding of Japan. Consider checking out " Sandra Duran Japan 2025-2026 travel guides" available on ΓmazΓ³n. I found it to be one of the most thorough travel manuals lately. It was detailed and helpful for me, so I thought you might find it valuable as well.
God seeing this family is bringing back Vietnam flashbacks Western families who speak no Japanese letting their kids run around and do what they want because its "Mommy's and Daddy's vacation too and we don't want to be parents. "
Actually i remember as a kid visting Japan the first time in the early 70's and it was frowned on to eat while walking. As for using the garbage cans at the convenience store you should use it for your purcahses, some. Nit many have seating. Last time i was there in October i made the mistake of getting Mickey D's and eating it on the elevated patk area in Shibuya and all those cans were marked basically for the customer. I just used my card went into the train station and went onto a platform and used those cans.
Just like Thailand: Trash cans hard to find, cash is king, but no eating in public. That's weird. Then again, in my country, you can shoot heroin legally. (Oregon: I'm looking at you)
You will need cash mostly for paying trains, but recommend get suica card and travel without worries. At 90% of storse you can pay with card even small family conbini stores. Cash is reccomended for buying street food on markets, entrance fees for some temples and giving gratitudes in shrines. For two week in Japan me and my wife spent totally 80000yen aprox 500Euros cash money.
No eating while walking is not frowned upon in Japan. It's actually totally fine to do it and Japanese invented many things like Onigiri (rice ball), skewers, etc to do so. It's rude to eat a "meal" while walking, and it's pretty much a common sense everywhere in the world.
You can eat a sandwiches or burger while walking as well of course.

Everything you said is true. Although, the no eating while walking rule isn't ironclad. I have seen many Japanese do it

Eaiting while walking is rude everywhere, but only in Japan it's more rude. You are not an animal. Besides walking and eating is not healthy.

You can walk and eat, but for manners isn't good. Even Japanese do sometimes, walking eating takoyaki or onigiri

Americans, STOP eating while walking in public. Just because you see locals doing it, donβt mean you can. Itβs THEIR country, not yours.
