Drawing cash from atm in Japan is the worst choice. Use your credit card where possible as it has the best rates (especially if your cc doesn't charge international transaction fee)
I'm also Australian and all AU banks will charge you a conversion fee. We got a WISE card instead, as the rates is really good, even if they charge a small fee you're still better off than withdrawing from your savings card at atm.
You should always have cash as not all places in Japan take cards. And in the event their system is down then have to pay cash.
There is no Best IC card, all work the same which every prefecture you get one from. You get the ic card of the prefecture you're in, PASMO and Suica in Kanto Prefecture like tokyo Chiba , Icoca in Kansai prefecture like osaka and Kyoto. Ic card works all over Japan regardless which one you have so there is no BEST ic card
They are going to stop making the plastic IC cards, and you literally always need to have your passport on you of you're not Japanese, it's the law for foreigners

Why why why do I need to bother figuring out 23 different travel cards? Itβs incredibly annoying. How much do I charge? Where are they valid? Who cares. Just let me use my credit card.
1. No need get 3 IC cards. Some different IC cards interoperated and can be used on most Japan railways. Suica, Pasmo, Icoca, Hayakaken, Sugoca, manaca, nimoca, Toica, Kitaca. Just get one for them.
2. Drawing Japan yen from local ATM is worst choice. The rate is bad and the bank might charge the exchange fee.
3. Tax refund requirement has been increased from 5,000 yen to 5,500 yen.
The queuing system is decent, but as a brit I don't need lines on the floor to tell me who is where in the que. Carrying cash would be something I'd need to get used to – all my cards that don't charge international fees do charge for cash withdrawals though, so it would be a major inconvenience either way and I'd do my best to take a reasonable amount of cash changed in the UK. Needing a Oyster cards style thing seems outdated too – we are spoiled by TfL…
If you're able to get Suica app working on your phone that's probably easier, esp. right now because they suspended sales of new IC cards due to a chip shortage. The app is a digital wallet card and you use your phone just like it were a physical card.
We had trouble getting a foreign (to Japan) credit card working to fund the card but eventually got AmEx to work and it was v convenient for 2 weeks in Japan. Esp. because you can load more cash to the card directly from the wallet without going to a machine.
At least compared to Canada the exchange rate on the ATMs in Japan is much worse than the ones where I convert before travel. There was almost a 5000yen difference for me last time converting 1k CAD in Japan vs Canadaβ¦. Feels bad man
