As crazy as it sounds, only formal stuff is expensive for Indian travel like flights and stuff. Like, dining? You can eat for a week, 3 times a day from restaurants in under 200 bucks. This value goes down if you just snack for lunch. Cabs? Although not recommended, but still under 4 dollars from one corner of city to the other. Declines if you use metro or Tuk tuk. Tickets for monuments, or other places like museums or places of heritage? Literally dirt cheap. Entry ticket to many monuments, just higher than snack prices. Hotels? Literally 200 dollars a night, plus activities, food and culture experience IN A 5 STAR HOTEL. Souvenirs? Collect free things like native plant samples, spiritual and religious stuff. Wanna buy? Dirt cheap. Bargain to lower prices up to even 50% or even higher if you are foreigner. My uncle who lives in Mauritius once traveled with his friend in youth, spending hardly 4000 dollars, considering he stayed for a fortnight in Ananta resorts. Or just go to Vietnam or Bali.
