first.. there's no packing community. 2nd, packing is different for everyone. some tend to carry less, some tend to carry more, women generally have everything more, Bigger guys like me will roll clothes to save space, thinner or small frame dudes may not want to do any of it. People who frequently travel will have packing cubes, since they know how idiotic airport security can be. I know some people who stand their suitcase upright and then put their clothes in as if stacking a shelf, learnt they stay a lot at Hostels, where a cupboard might be there or not.
The packing community? What is this? Is there a forum and people discuss optimal methods of packing? Does the community have a president who weighs in on disputes? I have so many questions..
Solid advice. It seems weird to me that rolling big things would save space if they're going to create a lot of air gaps because round things in square holes and whatnot. Rolled up small garments could fill said holes to a point but the same can be said for holes left by squarely folded jeans/shirts.

Thicker, courser materials you wanna lie flat. Thinner clothes will have room saved by rolling.
