They stole my money pouch from the front pants pocket. Now I carry my money in my wallet that has a strap that goes around my neck , but you are vulnerable when you take out cash to pay for something so put it back quickly.

Tour guide, Rick Steves, carries a fake wallet, in his back pocket, with a card which says, "You should look for a new profession." in several different languages.

All phones come with lanyards to secure phones to the wrist or neck!
But most people don't use it, they always think, theft only happens to other people!
    LOL!

Putting your hand over your valuable in your pocket doesn't work. I had an incident where a guy came from the front and hit me so hard that my hand was forced out of my pocket and at that very moment took my phone. I was fully alert of my environment and also knew the moment my phone got taken.

I have a small black crossbody bag. The strap hangs over my left shoulder with the bag to the right. Then I have a carabiner attached from the bag and hook it on the loop of my pants.

So the bag is always more in front of me, double secured. The bag also has a sleeve where you can put a belt through. If you are wearing a belt.

Due to me knowing they can cut the band they won't get far because it's still attached to me, and it is in front of me, it has many pockets I feel much more protected.

I will also have a light weight backpack for an umbrella, water and so on, making it even less likely for someone to get away with my valuables.

Many years ago I took a school group along with some of their parents on a trip to England and France on March break. When we were on the subway in Paris during the morning I was sitting where I could see all my group. I noticed a group of men with a little old lady get on our train car. I immediately knew they were pickpockets. I made eye contact with the old lady, smiled at her and gave her my seat. She was so surprised. She mumbled something to me. She made eye contact with the men, shook her head and they all moved to the next car. She mumbled something else to me and followed them! I was so relieved! The only money anyone lost on that trip was when one boy left his wallet in a restaurant. I saw him crying on the bus. Found out what happened, then asked everyone if they could spare a little bit of money. We literally passed a hat around the coach. This is why I liked to include parents when I did student trips…in addition to better student behaviour, parents have resources that students often don’t. By the time that hat went around the coach that young man ended up with just slightly more than what he had lost. Disaster averted. Happy kid!

I had a group of teenagers rush us on a bridge in Paris. I saw them coming at us and they swarmed us laughter and yelling. One boy bumped me and I yelled “thief” a couple of times and pushed him away from me and they ran away.

My friend had Gypsies THROW a BABY at them. They dropped everything to catch the Baby, in shock, next thing everything was GONE including the Baby.

On every single trip we've made to Europe I always put a wrinkled bandana inside my two front pockets where I keep my wallet and cellphone. I don't know if it is enough of a "shield", but at least I've never been picked pocket.

Once in New York, the hotel we stayed in did not have a safe in the room, so I bought a slim fanny bag and put it across my body under my shirt to carry our passports. When passing the security check at Top of the Rock, I told the security guards about it, and while laughing they said, and I quote: "That's pretty smart" and "I ain't mad at you".

One BIG mistake is wearing the backpack at the back of the body while it should be worn at the front where you can control it much better😊

Also leave the good jewelry at home. My cousin's had their necklaces ripped off their neck in Italy and they didn't feel a thing

I like some of the travel purses especially the cross bodies that have spots for your credit cards because you can reach your hand in and only have to pull out one card rather than pulling out a wallet with cash and cards Etc. When we were on the cruise and we were in Port I only took out enough cash that I needed for that day and the rest of my money stayed in the safe on the ship. If you're not sure better to use your credit card rather than flashing cash

When I was traveling years ago I was sitting by myself in a cafe in Paris in between getting off the Metro but before I got on to the regional train. I had taken my carry-on bag that I was traveling with for the weekend and I wrapped it around my leg and the leg of the chair and had it sitting on the side of my body that was away from the street. Yes if I am out and I have my crossbody I wear it on my person at all times and will again try to position it so that it's either directly in front of me or if I'm saying at a table outside it's on the side of my body that is facing away from the street

My cellphone was picked out of my purse front zipper in Barcelona. Walking down the street one lady to my left sneezes super loud and another lady to my right grabbed my phone. I didn’t even realize it happened until I got back to my hotel and couldn’t find it. 😡

I always have extra cash stuffed inside my bra. Nobody is touching me there without me knowing it. I go to a bathroom stall and pull it out if i anticipate using it. I have often put my licenses and credit card there too. I honestly dont care who sees me reach in and grab them either. I also keep emergency money in my shoe. I do not care a purse in a crowd, and the only think i keep in a back pack if i use one is water, handy wipes, and a snack. My husband carries his wallet in his front pocket, and when he pays for something, I put my back to him and watch anyone coming near us.
